Drywall Repair in Rockford, IL

Walls in Rockford take a lot of seasonal punishment. Houses here go from a dry, furnace-heated January to a sticky, humid July, and the framing behind the walls swells and shrinks with every swing. That movement shows up as hairline cracks above doors and windows, nail and screw pops in ceilings, and taped seams that start to open at the corners. Add the everyday damage, a doorknob through the wall, a TV mount pulled out, a ceiling stained by an ice dam or a leaking upstairs toilet, and most homes in town have at least a patch or two waiting. The older houses on the near east side and in Churchill's Grove bring their own challenge, since many still have their original lath and plaster.

We match the repair to the wall. Small holes and nail pops get re-secured and filled; larger holes get a properly backed patch so the new piece stays put; cracks get cut out, taped and feathered wide so they don't telegraph back in a season. On plaster, we re-anchor loose sections to the lath with plaster washers before filling, and use materials that bond to old plaster rather than sit on top of it. We match the existing texture as closely as possible, from smooth to orange peel to knockdown, prime the repair, and can paint it to match when you have the color. Floors get covered, dust is kept to a minimum with careful sanding, and the room is vacuumed before we leave.

What this covers

  • Nail and screw pop repair
  • Small and large hole patching with proper backing
  • Settling and stress crack repair at corners and openings
  • Lath and plaster crack and hole repair
  • Water-stained or sagging ceiling section replacement
  • Texture matching: smooth, orange peel, knockdown
  • Corner bead and dented outside corner repair
  • Primer, paint touch-up and full cleanup
A note from around here: Plaster cracks are a constant in the century-old homes of Haight Village, Brown's Hills and Knightsville and the blocks around Garfield Avenue, while newer houses in Rockford's northeast side subdivisions and out in Roscoe tend to show nail pops and seam cracks as their framing settles.

How a drywall repair visit usually goes

Look and Plan

We look at the damage, check whether it's drywall or plaster and whether there's moisture behind it, and give you a clear quote for the repair.

Prep the Room

We cover floors and furniture, move what needs moving, and open up the damaged area, cutting back to solid material.

Patch and Finish

We back and patch the opening, tape and coat the seams in thin layers, and sand carefully between coats to keep dust down.

Texture, Prime and Clean

We match the texture, prime the repair, touch up paint if you have it, and vacuum and wipe down the area before we go.

Rockford's older housing makes plaster work a regular part of the job. Homes built before the 1940s, from the near east side out to the Seventh Street area and the west side neighborhoods, usually have three-coat plaster over wood lath. When the keys that lock the plaster to the lath break, a ceiling can sag or a wall can bulge, and a simple patch over loose plaster won't last. We re-anchor first, then patch. We also see a lot of basement drywall that was installed decades ago and has been through a wet spring or two; where it's stained or crumbling at the bottom, we cut it back above the damage and replace it, and suggest a small gap at the floor so it doesn't wick water again.

What shapes the price in Rockford

The price of a drywall repair depends mostly on size, location and finish. A few nail pops or small holes in one room are quick work. Larger holes that need backing, ceiling repairs that call for ladders and overhead work, and water-damaged sections that have to be cut out and replaced take more time and material. Plaster repairs take longer than drywall because each layer needs to bond and cure. Textured walls and ceilings add a step, and painting the patched area or the whole wall adds time. Grouping several repairs into one visit is almost always the most cost-effective way to go.

Neighbors often ask

Why do the same cracks keep coming back above my doors?

Cracks that radiate from the corners of doors and windows come from movement, as the house settles and the framing expands and contracts between Rockford's dry winters and humid summers. If they were simply filled with spackle the last time, they reopen. We cut the crack open, embed tape across it, and feather the compound wide so the joint can flex a little without showing. In plaster, we also re-secure the surrounding area so the patch isn't sitting on loose material.

My ceiling has a brown stain from an ice dam last winter. Can you fix it?

Yes, once the source is handled. Ice dams push meltwater under shingles and into the ceiling along the outside walls, which is very common here. We check that the area is dry, cut out any drywall that has softened or sagged, replace it, and prime with a stain-blocking primer so the brown ring doesn't bleed through new paint. If the roof or attic still needs attention, we'll point that out so the stain doesn't come back next February.

Can you match the texture on my walls?

In most cases, yes. We look at the existing finish closely and recreate it with the right tools and compound consistency, whether it's smooth, a light orange peel or a knockdown. On older plaster with a hand-troweled finish, we skim the patch to match the surface. A perfect match is hardest on large, flat ceilings in raking light, and we'll be honest about what to expect before we start.

Is it worth repairing old plaster, or should I replace it with drywall?

Repairing is usually the better choice when most of the wall is still sound. Plaster is dense, quiet and durable, and tearing it out is messy and expensive. We re-attach loose sections and patch cracks and holes so the wall stays original. If a large area has completely failed, we can replace that section with drywall shimmed to match the plaster's thickness, so the trim still fits and the repair doesn't show.

How long before I can paint over a patch?

For small repairs, often the same day or the next. Larger patches and plaster repairs need more drying time, especially in humid summer weather or in a cool basement, and painting too soon can leave a dull spot or let a seam show. We'll tell you when it's ready, and if you'd rather we handle the paint, we can come back and finish it.
